Frequently Asked Questions

Arakan Martial Art was created for the real world. It is not, nor has it ever been, a ‘ring’ or competition based style of sport. With deep roots in the traditional Burmese martial art ‘Burmese Thaing’, Master Robert Kyaw adapted this traditional art to create an effective, highly adaptable and no-nonsense self-protection style that suits our modern world.

Arakan Martial Art teaches you how to use your whole body as a weapon - from elbows to knees, open palms, edge hands, closed fists, locks, deflections, traps, blocks, bridges, kicks, forearms, your head – the list goes on! With consistent training you will develop impenetrable defences and intricate footwork that allow you to dynamically flow around an opponent, giving you a huge advantage in a street situation.

You will learn to move your body in dynamic ways by developing a greater understanding of body weight, momentum and how to move with a path of least resistance. You will develop an advanced understanding of energy slings and circuits to produce movements with precision, speed, power and flow. You will learn how to use your opponent’s size and energy against them, meaning you don’t have to be the biggest person in the room to protect yourself effectively.

We believe everyone has the right to feel safe and have the ability to protect themselves and their loved ones. There is no limit to how dynamic and adaptable you can become on your Arakan journey. Arakan provides you with many choices for how you can respond in any situation, with our main focus always being the personal safety and wellbeing of both you and your loved ones.

The online course goes for 52 weeks and is designed to be done at the pace of one lesson per week

This also includes bonus lessons every 5 weeks and we also recommend that you do each weeks lesson more than once in the week to help revisit the content of the lesson which will help accellerate your learning and ingraine the techniques into your nervous system faster.

We find that students that train 3 or more times a week usually progress a lot faster than students that train one or twice a week.

Arakan is a dynamic, deep and powerful style, there is so much to learn, so after your first 52 weeks, you may be invited to continue with your journey and learn more and sign up for your second year.

The first thing to understand about the Arakan Martial Art Online course is that it is not simply a bunch of videos showing different techniques.

The course has been carefully constructed by Master Robert Kyaw and each lesson works just like a private lesson where you are guided through a warm up and then a lesson that focusses on specific learning outcomes. Each weekly lesson then builds on the previous lessons and utilises Robert's decades of teaching knowledge to ensure that you are learning effectively and efficiently so that you feel yourself progressing and building up your skills, co-ordination and fitness.

Although not required, we do also recommend complimenting the online course with some private online lessons. This is a fantastic way to get real time feedback and instruction from one of our highly skilled instructors which can help you progress much faster and gain a deeper understanding of Arakan Martial Art.
